About Auto Insurance Liability Coverage

One of the coverages we often see people lacking adequate protection for is also one the most important – Liability coverage.

Liability coverage is required in New York State in order to register your vehicle. However, in many cases, the minimum required coverage may not be enough as lawsuits are becoming more frequent and expensive every year.

If you are held liable for bodily injury or property damage as the result of an accident and your policy does not have adequate coverage, you could be left paying out of pocket.

Increasing your Liability coverage is an inexpensive way to protect your assets. For additional protection, we recommend an Umbrella Insurance policy.

Our team will work to find you all the discounts that you are eligible for, so that you get the best price possible for the protection you and your family need. Additionally, we represent companies that have great features like Diminishing Deductible, Accident Forgiveness, and Trip Interruption Coverage.

Call MetzWood today (or fill out our online quote form) to receive a review of your current policy or to get a brand new quote. Our knowledgeable agents are happy to help find you the right policy.

FAQs

Q: How long will my car insurance claim take?

A: Every claim is unique, and many factors determine how long the process will take. Be sure to give your claims advocate all the necessary details and documentation to allow the process to run smoothly.

Q: If the damage is not my fault, will I still have to pay the deductible?

A: Yes, you may still have to pay the deductible. This depends on the type of coverage you have. But, if your insurance carrier can recover the amount paid, including your deductible, from the person responsible, they will. If they are unsuccessful, you can choose to attempt to recover the deductible yourself.

For more information on how auto deductibles work, give us a call at (518) 392-5161.

Q: What if my vehicle is registered out-of-state?

A: Many insurance companies will not have an issue with this, but the DMV will. Many DMVs won’t accept out-of-state insurance and could fine you or suspend your license or plates. We recommend that you go to the DMV as soon as possible to have this corrected.

If you are military personnel, there may be an exception form you will need to fill out in order to keep your vehicle registered out-of-state.

Q: Where do I get my auto ID card?

A: Many carriers have mobile apps that you can use to request ID cards. If you are unsure if your carrier has a mobile app, the best way to find out is to Google them. You will likely be instructed to create a customer login, and once set up, you will have access to your ID cards.

If you have any further questions or need assistance, call us at (518) 392-5161.

Q: What is a deductible and how does it work?

A: A deductible is the amount of money you will need to pay before your insurance policy begins to cover the costs of repairs. This prevents extremely small claims from being filed since insurance should be used for larger emergencies. For example, if your auto deductible is $500 and you have $4,000 in damages, you will pay $500 to the auto repair shop, and the insurance company will pay the other $3,500.

Something to keep in mind when choosing your coverage:

- Higher Deductible = Lower car insurance rate but higher out of pocket costs

- Lower Deductible = Higher car insurance rate and lower out-of-pocket costs.

If you would like to learn more about deductibles, give us a call at (518) 392-5161.

Q: When should I receive a damage estimate?

A: We recommend that you obtain a damage estimate before filing a claim. Once you’ve received an estimate, give us a call to discuss your options. We’ll also be happy to go over your policy with you and check if your estimate is above your deductible.

Q: Can I add someone to my policy?

A: If you are looking to add or remove individuals from your policy, give us a call at (518) 392-5161 so that we can walk you through this process. We ask that you have the following information on hand so that we can ensure the process runs smoothly and quickly:

- Policyholder’s name and policy number

- The name, date of birth, and driver’s license # of the driver you would like to add

- Policy number or address

- What cars are being removed or added (if any) and their VIN numbers

- Specify Coverage – will you need more? You can also choose to keep it the same as the other vehicles on your policy

Q: How do I cancel a policy?

A: We recognize that you may want to look into other policies, or maybe you recently sold your vehicle. If your policy is no longer right for you or is no longer needed, give us a call at (518) 392-5161.

We can certainly help you with policy cancellation, and if you are looking for a new policy, we would be happy to help you with that as well.
